Geota | New landscapes.
October 2020. Geota, a portuguese environmental NGO wanted to create awareness for the importance of riverside ecosystems and to fight for the removal of barriers and the non construction of non-used dams in Portugal.
There are more than 8,000 barrier and dams in Portugal today. Many of them are obsolete or were built unnecessarily, but little is discussed about the subject. Why? They are far away from the country's large urban centers. “ Far from sight, far from mind”.
The negative impacts on the construction of river barriers are huge, one of them is the amount of sand that is not delivered naturally through river flow to our coastline. Yes, an inland dam could be responsible for the disappearance of sand from the coastline.
Since beaches may cease to exist... why not turn them into modern architectural projects?
We created a fake real estate agency and a fake architectural project and started to promote the project.
We chose two beaches near big cities, Costa da Caparica and Costa de Espinho, to receive two large marinas... with luxury apartments, space for boats, restaurants and business buildings.
The controversy was launched: if the mere possibility of losing your beach causes so much outrage, why doesn't the disorderly construction of thousands of dams generate any discussion?
